Why are Tolkien's works important? Why are they (or have they been) important to you as an individual?

To me Tolkien is important because of the emphasis on true friendship in his work as well as other virtues like honour and self sacrifice.

I believe LOTR heralded the birth of fantasy literature.

THe most important thing for me is the friends I have made through a shared love of Tolkien.
