I suspected he was a youngster because he seemed fluffy and chubby (for a hawk), but people who know more about birds told me that juveniles have that barring on their tail feathers. When they are adults, their tails are plain red (hence the name).
I am hoping that we have a cold winter to kill off the fungus on the clematis.
