Hornblower Drabble "Half-pay"

Characters: Lt. Bush, one of his sisters
Warnings: none
Rating: G
Note: William Bush belongs to the Forester Estate, not to me.
****************************************************************

“I'm left on half-pay until the Admiralty recalls me.” Her brother stared into the small fire that sputtered in the grate.

Annie poured his tea into the saucer to cool. “We’ll manage fine.” Her heart ached to see him so downcast, cut off from his ships and his battles, yet she wanted to raise her skirts in her hands and dance about the room. Instead, she said, “We will need to go through your clothing. I can turn the collar on that coat. It will last until you get your next ship.”

“Don’t you ever worry, Annie?”

“No,” she lied.

Aiyee! That's lovely. Is it for that alphabet thing?

Thanks so much! No, this is just a random recession-inspired drabble.

Hopefully that means more from you for alphabet soup.. *rubs hands*

Bush's sister is as rock-solid as Bush himself. I like. :D

Annie's the oldest sister, so (as often happens) she is the sensible and responsible one. Since Forester didn't bother to tell us anything about them, I feel free to give them names and personalities. I have a plotbunny for a story set when Hornblower and Bush are presumed dead in France. In it, Lady Barbara decides to help Bush's family by playing match-maker for the sisters.
Thanks so much for commenting!
I do need to work on my alphabet soup stories, don't I?

I would love to have another friend from the world's tiniest fandom. :D Though I do have to warn you that my journal entries are all over the map, so LOTR, horses, cats, SCA, music, gardening, and so on are mixed in with the Hornblower stuff.
