Ship Found in New York Dig

[livejournal.com profile] just_ann_now forwarded the news that the remains of an 18th-century ship have been found at the World Trade Center site. Archaologists suspect that the hull was deliberately sunk as landfill. A reader suggested that they clean it up and rent it out for $1,975 a month. Lol...

I'm both fascinated and a little bit creeped out by the whole thing. Also, looking for HORNBLOWER TIME-TRAVEL AU. Hah!

*frantically ducks the flying plotbunnies* Why creeped out?
BTW, I have NOT forgotten the Haiti story. Though I need to write a 200 word fic for LOTR_community challenges this weekend.
I can tell it's hot here. The cats don't want to sit on me.

Why creeped out?

The prospect of perfectly-preserved mud-covered bodies.

Ghosts from various time periods meeting to be horrified at the perfidy of mankind and decline of civilization! Go for it!

Eww, though the experts seem to think the ship was scuttled. The shoe was probably lost by a drunken sailor. :)
Hee, I thought of a story where Faramir is transported across the dimensions to a camp of homeless people living under a bridge. He isn't impressed.

I bet all archeology departments from the East Coast are already fighting each other with tooth and claw about access to the excavation site.

I got the impression that this is a rescue excavation and construction was not going to be long delayed for the archaeologists' work. Which is a shame. They should get their priorieties straight.

I noticed a very short article on this in the UK press. Fascinating discovery, let us know if you hear any more about it. Wonder if they'll try to preserve it? Waterlogged wood on that scale is a bugger to conserve!

I will keep an eye on the news. Did you see the article about the medieval bridge that was conserved using sugar?

Fascinating! Thanks for the link. I knew about this technique but as far as I know it's not used very commonly. Very interesting.
