I was surprised a while back to learn that butterfly bush isn't nearly as useful as butterfly flower, (Asclepias Tuberosa). You are right about wild vs. cultivars - I had a bright yellow yarrow that, though pretty, was absolutely untouched by butterflies or bees. So now I'm very careful what I put in.
