The haunted graveyard is finally up! Very late this year due to contractor mayhem. In other news, my walk to Rivendell stalled when my beloved pedometer (which was a freebie from a former employer) died. I am waiting for the new one to arrive in the mail.

I took off a week while I was in Boston, but I am now approaching Weathertop which is the halfway point between Hobbiton and Rivendell.

New walking challenge--Bree to Rivendell. Slogging through the Midgewater Marshes. Walked over six miles a day at Pennsic.

I reached the Prancing Pony yesterday! 135 miles. I should stop in a pub for a beer to celebrate. A few days behind schedule. Now on to Rivendell to visit the elves.

I escaped Old Man Willow and am now getting lost in the Barrow-downs. Michael spotted an owl sitting in a tree! I have heard them around here (in fact, I was convinced our yard was haunted until I found screech owl recordings on YouTube) but have never seen one before.

If you are interested in a Lord of the Rings walking (or swimming) challenge, this site has tables with extremely detailed milestones and cumulative mileage from Hobbiton all the way to Mordor. There are also side quests if you want to walk the Paths of the Dead or ride with the Rohirrim.

The Eowyn Challenge: Walk to Rivendell

Yesterday I reached the next milestone in the "walking to Bree" challenge--Crickhollow. Have covered seventy-five miles as of yesterday.

Today I reached the next milestone in the "walking to Bree" challenge--the woods above Woodhall (46 miles total). Didn't see any Black Riders or elves. "The Atlas of Middle-earth" has the hobbits walking at 3.5 miles per hour for this part of their journey. That's pretty fast for their short little legs.

To get used to walking in the heat before Pennsic, I've set myself a walking challenge. The plan is to cover the distance from Hobbiton to Bree according to Karen Fonstad's "The Atlas of Middle-earth." I am including all steps taken during the day since I cover a surprising distance just wandering around the house. According to my pedometer, today I reached the Green Hills in the Eastfarthing.

I need to acclimate myself to the hot weather before an outdoor vacation in August so I've decided to set myself a challenge--walk from Hobbiton to Bree. According to "The Atlas of Middle-earth," the distance is 135 miles. If I include the miles I walk while on vacation, I should be able to do it.
