I took off a week while I was in Boston, but I am now approaching Weathertop which is the halfway point between Hobbiton and Rivendell.

New walking challenge--Bree to Rivendell. Slogging through the Midgewater Marshes. Walked over six miles a day at Pennsic.

Driving back and forth from Pennsic (we made three round trips), we listened to the 1979 Mind's Eye production of "The Lord of the Rings." Loved Reverb Treebeard and the snarky Lieutenant of the Dark Tower, not as fond of the Gaffer's voice (he sounded senile and/or drunk) or the less-than-terrifying turkey gobble of the Nazgul. Lord Branwyn and I decided that Samwise would have made a better Ringbearer than Frodo since he was tougher and less imaginative. I could see him destroying the Ring then going back to Rosie and his garden without the lingering damage that Frodo suffered. We also considered whether anyone else besides Gollum could have guided the hobbits into Mordor. Aragorn probably could have led them to the border, but how would they have gotten over the mountains?

I reached the Prancing Pony yesterday! 135 miles. I should stop in a pub for a beer to celebrate. A few days behind schedule. Now on to Rivendell to visit the elves.

I escaped Old Man Willow and am now getting lost in the Barrow-downs. Michael spotted an owl sitting in a tree! I have heard them around here (in fact, I was convinced our yard was haunted until I found screech owl recordings on YouTube) but have never seen one before.

This is funny yet interesting. Was Tom truly such a jolly, kind soul?

If you are interested in a Lord of the Rings walking (or swimming) challenge, this site has tables with extremely detailed milestones and cumulative mileage from Hobbiton all the way to Mordor. There are also side quests if you want to walk the Paths of the Dead or ride with the Rohirrim.

The Eowyn Challenge: Walk to Rivendell

Yesterday I reached the next milestone in the "walking to Bree" challenge--Crickhollow. Have covered seventy-five miles as of yesterday.

Today I reached the next milestone in the "walking to Bree" challenge--the woods above Woodhall (46 miles total). Didn't see any Black Riders or elves. "The Atlas of Middle-earth" has the hobbits walking at 3.5 miles per hour for this part of their journey. That's pretty fast for their short little legs.

“I've wandered since Tharbad so I thank you for your aid.” Despite his strange accent and clothing, this Man looked like one of the Dunedain as he sat beside the small fire.

“Thirty leagues to the east then fifteen leagues past the ford,” the ranger told him again. “Rivendell it is called in Westron.”

Boromir of Gondor leaned forward to warm his hands. “And all the while I asked for Imladris. I was close to despair before we chanced to meet.”

The ranger looked up from stirring the rabbit stew. “I see nothing of chance in your journey, my friend.”

“From Minas Tirith? Is that along the Greenway? I hope it was not a hard journey.” Looks like a ranger, Barliman thought, excepting he’s too finely dressed.

“Elves? No elves ever stop at the Pony, but we see some rangers and dwarves. They have business along the East Road. The dwarves, I mean, not the rangers. Who knows what those rangers are up to.”

“There’s no Imladris hereabouts. Sorry I can’t be more help, Master Boromir. After you’ve had some supper, would you care to join the company?” The common room would be packed to hear this princely traveler’s tales.

Tolman was beating the bounds when one of the Big Folk came striding up the south road. Alone and on foot but armed with a sword.

Tolman drew his bow and nocked an arrow. “Just turn around, master, and go back to wherever you come from."

“Are you a Halfling?” the Outsider asked, eyes wide with amazement.

“Hobbit, if you please, master,” Tolman replied, aiming the arrow at his heart.

“I seek Elrond Half-elven, lord of Imladris.”

“Well, he isn't here. There ain't no elves, half or otherwise, in the Shire. And no Men neither, if you take my meaning.”

To get used to walking in the heat before Pennsic, I've set myself a walking challenge. The plan is to cover the distance from Hobbiton to Bree according to Karen Fonstad's "The Atlas of Middle-earth." I am including all steps taken during the day since I cover a surprising distance just wandering around the house. According to my pedometer, today I reached the Green Hills in the Eastfarthing.

Title: The Great Wain
Author: Branwyn
Characters: Merry, Eowyn
Source: ROTK (book)
Warnings: none

Eowyn helped him climb down to the grass. Merry felt so heavy, weighed low by grief and the long, jolting hours in harness. Behind them, the king’s wain rose like a barrow, deepest black against the evening sky.

She pointed to seven stars that shone high overhead. “In the Mark, those are called the Great Wain. Now when I look at them, I will think of Theoden King.”

“That is also their name in the Shire. And I will think of him, too.”

Eowyn held out her hand. Together they walked toward the fires and the kindly cheer of camp.

Note: In "The Hobbit," the Plough or Big Dipper is referred to as the Wain, and since Tolkien states that there are cultural similarities between the hobbits and the Rohirrim (who originally lived in the northern lands), it isn't unreasonable to assume that the Riders called it by the same name.

I need to acclimate myself to the hot weather before an outdoor vacation in August so I've decided to set myself a challenge--walk from Hobbiton to Bree. According to "The Atlas of Middle-earth," the distance is 135 miles. If I include the miles I walk while on vacation, I should be able to do it.

Just came across this. There have been rumors for years that Jackson filmed a scene with Faramir and Eowyn's wedding, but this is the first photo I've seen. I love that Faramir's costume is similar to Boromir's costume in FOTR.
