The quote I really wanted to find (but couldn't) was one where Tolkien was talking at length about how, when he was in the military, he spent a great deal of time day-dreaming about his stories and fictional languages. Then he remarked (as if this had never occured to him), "I suppose that was something of a dereliction of duty, wasn't it?" Bwahahaha! (Sounds like me at work, actually...)
