Life before the Internet Age
Jan. 30th, 2010 08:24 pmRemember traveller's checks from Thomas Cook and American Express? Does anyone use them anymore? (The British banking system recently announced that it plans to eliminate all bank drafts, including personal checks, in the near future. I hope that the US doesn't follow suit. I love my "coffee cup" check stock.)
Remember how difficult it was to purchase anything from overseas? You had to write back and forth to the supplier to determine availability and price at the current exchange rate. Then you had to arrange the means of payment. When our friends travelled, they took along huge shopping lists.
The world has changed so much. The other day, I came across an old carbon copy in a file and held it up to the light to see the impressions left by the metal typewriter keys, the translucent onion skin paper as much a relic of an ancient age as a piece of medieval parchment. :)
