Someone on my friendslist (and I apologize for not remembering the name) saw the most recent restoration of Metropolis and was impressed, so I went to a screening last night at the local film society. Amazing! See it if you get the chance. The film society director apologized for the quality of the print, but it was incomparably better than any I have ever seen, plus the plot makes much more sense with the additional 30 minutes of restored footage. Huge sections of the storyline had been cut, which explains why I never could make heads or tails of parts of that film!

If the last Metropolis you saw was before the 2001 (or 03?) restoration, then you were REALLY seeing an amazing piece of work. The astonishing quality of the last restoration attempt was truly stunning, and the film made SO MUCH MORE SENSE.

The new version adds on to this--and the new footage is intriguing. It adds depth and dimension to many characters. Some of the new stuff is so short that it does nothing except show a character from a different angle, but overall it fleshes everything out and returns it to its initial pacing.

I was extremely happy about the earlier restoration--it finally made sense overall, and now the new stuff gives it just that much more depth.

SO GLAD you liked it! :)

I haven't seen the film in over 10 years, so the change was unbelievable!

I've always loved that movie! Thanks for letting me know. I hope I can get a glance of it on the big screen somewhere around here. It's iffy, but the OKC museum is getting better about bringing us everything. *crosses fingers*

It should reach you eventually if it made it to the backwaters of Cleveburg, lol. Dazzling from the first amazingly clear frame. I remembered it looking like it had been filmed through cheesecloth.

When this version premiered in Germany earlier this year, most broadsheet feature pages published articles on the restoration process, and the effort that went into preserving this movie was absolutely amazing. (I only saw an older, abridged version at a local silent-movie festival ten years ago.)

I saw that it previewed at a Munich film festival earlier this year. I loved that they also restored the music that was originally composed for the soundtrack.
