B2MeM Day 16 (late): The Truth About Tom Bombadil

Researchers at the "Tolkien Sarcasm Page" have discovered the truth about Tom Bombadil. Mere coincidence or something more sinister? You decide for yourself.

Edit: As a bonus, here is their review of Bakshi's Lord of the Rings.

I'm neither Lombard, Hun or Goth or any of that eastern crowd
We're Anglo-Saxon to the core although we fight on horses proud

Hee! I've read essays claiming that since the Rohirrim were a horse culture, they couldn't be modeled on the Anglo-Saxons. My theory is that Tolkien put the Rohirrim on horses because he himself had trained with a cavalry unit (King Edward's Horse) while an undergrad at Oxford. His understanding of non-mechanized warfare (this was a few years before WW1) was probably influenced by his experiences as a cavalryman. Also, he is supposed to have had a natural affinity for horses, and that is easy to believe based on how he wrote about them.

I guess it would be much easier for him to have his 'Anglo-Saxon' warriors as a horse culture than be exactly A-S - as he had put them a very long way from the sea...!

Coming from somewhere with a Celto-Viking history we only touched on the Anglo-Saxons in history lessons, that I remember. When I first read LotR I saw the Rohirrim as simply being horse-born Vikings.

Oddly, one of the things I remember about Anglo-Saxons is that they were very like the Vikings and that their basic war-bands were usually about 30 strong - much the same size as their basic boat crews.

I have to confess that I was NOT sorry when they left him out of the movies. After I read Bored of the Rings, I couldn't stop thinking of him as "Tim Benzedrine." :D
