In 1967, the New York Times posted a cringe-inducing interview with Tolkien entitled The Prevalence of Hobbits. I hope that Tolkien didn't read it, lol.
Hmm! This article almost sounded like something he threw together from a lot of different sources. It's all rather superficial. Do you suppose he actually interviewed Tolkien? If so, how could he write about him so lightheartedly? :-/ I agree, I hope Tolkien didn't read it, also!
1967 was roughly the year I first picked up LotR and the Hobbit and got hooked.
In Tolkien's letters, he complains about bizarre biographical sketches. Maybe he was referring to this article? The references to the hippies ("Frodo Lives!") cracked me up.
