Playing chords would be much easier if I had a few additional fingers or fingers the width of a pencil. After confessing my nearly total ignorance of chord structure (I studied music theory in high school but have long since forgotten whatever I managed to learn), my teacher handed me a chart along with the instructions to work on the major and minor chords (leaving the more arcane versions for later). I told him that once I know the chords, I will be able to play bad folk music.:D
I've been playing for almost three months now and am surprised by how much I like this instrument. I hate to be disloyal to the violin, but the guitar is more user-friendly. I wouldn't say it's simpler to play (the very concept of having to damp the strings is daunting), but the way you hold the instrument and the hand positions are so much more natural, at least to me. The strings are less painful to play and don't leave grooves on my fingertips (maybe because they are slightly larger in diameter than violin strings). Even setting up is less bother. You don't have to tighten and rosin a bow (though you do have two more strings to tune), and you don't have to attach a neckrest. Of course, all of this may explain why there are legions of guitarists and not so many fiddlers...
